Position Overview


Pacific Rim Conservation is currently seeking Animal Care volunteers to support our Seabird Translocation team in Kahuku, Oahu for the year of 2020.

Mahalo for your interest in joining the Pacific Rim Conservation volunteer team. With over 100 chicks to care for, volunteers are essential to the success of our Seabird Translocation projects.  A lot of the work our staff, interns and volunteers participate in is not always “glorious” and is often quite dirty.  If you are looking to gain experience/ exposure to the wildlife conservation world, want to be a part of a ground-breaking project working to ensure the survival of these seabird species and are willing to do the "dirty work" to make this project succeed, then this is the position for you!

Qualities of an idea candidate:
  •  Able to commit to coming one day a week for the duration of the season  
​​               (Preference will be given to those who don’t anticipate missing any days)
  •  Has a great, positive attitude
  •  Willing to receive constructive criticism 
  •  Detail oriented
  •  Works efficiently 
  •  Self - motivated
  •  Punctual (Arrives before or right at 8 AM)
  •  Enjoys doing “dirty” jobs​
​             -  Washing dishes/ feeding tools used for the chicks
             -  Cleaning out chick poop from their burrows
             -  Botanical Restoration work in the field 
  •  Able to work outside for 2 – 4 hours at a time
  •  Able to be on your feet for hours at a time
  • Able to lift/ carry 50 lbs


Daily Volunteer Schedule

Start Date:
Last week of March                 End Date: Second week of June
​
  • 8:00:  Arrive and help load up feeding materials into the car and travel to field site
  • 8:15 - 12:00: Assist in feeding the translocated chicks (only staff feeds and handles the chicks)
  • 12:00: Travel back to base yard
  • 12:00 - 2:00: Clean all dishes and tools used to feed the translocated chicks
  • 2:00: Head home!

Duties and Responsibilities of Animal Care volunteers:​​
  • Assist staff in transport of diets and feeding materials from the base yard to the translocation site
  • Assist staff in feeding translocated chicks* (2 - 4 hours) 
                       * Volunteers will not feed the translocated chicks but simply support the staff
  • Assist in thoroughly cleaning dishes and tools used to feed translocated chicks (1 - 2 hours)
                      Occasionally volunteers will assist with pulling weeds, watering plants, assisting with out planting or other field work/                            restoration jobs as needed.

Minimum Commitment
One day each week for the duration of the Project (End of February - end of June)
        *If you are unable to commit to coming weekly for the duration of the project, you will not be considered to join our animal care team

Location
This volunteer position is based at the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge outside of Kahuku on Oahu, Hawaii.

Compensation
This volunteer position has no monetary compensation or benefits. 

There are many non-monetary benefits including: directly assisting in saving seabird species, working with passionate seabird conservation leaders, gaining hands on experience in seabird aviculture/ animal care and being able to spend time outdoors surrounded by rare sea and shore birds, just to name a few.
